I actually had an agent for this humor book. It is very different in that it is written in the second person.
Publishers were intrigued and thought it could be a hit -- if I was a celebrity. With a well known name, the different book, they thought would sell. As a "regular" writer, they were afraid.
So, the agent stopped working, so I opted out of our contract and went through Createspace. For me, it was a great choice and I am fortunate in that my husband is a computer engineer, who flew through the formatting and everything else that was an option to buy from Createspace. So, my costs were minimal. He even did this for my friend.
My only concern with self-publishing is the stigma from bookstores. I try to get myself into the independent book stores for promotion, but they are hesitant because I didn't have a "real" publisher. I hope that breaks soon. If I had the money, I would hire a publicist and that would solve most of my problems. To have someone do the marketing would give the impression that the published book is "really" published and worth having in their store.
